19 years ago, I was fortunate enough to join Systems Engineering (SE)—a company that aligned perfectly with my specific interests and career goals. It may be surprising to hear, however, that it wasn’t the technology that attracted me as much as the culture of service. Prior to joining the company, I was a client of SE’s and had tremendous service experiences from the engineers, customer service representatives, and the sales team.
Time has passed, the company has grown, and our reach has extended beyond Portland to northern Maine, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts but, our culture of service has only grown stronger.
Excellent Engineering, Superior Customer Service
Maintaining and enhancing our service culture isn’t always easy. Naturally, as a professional Managed IT, IT Security Services, and Cloud Strategy organization, we have always focused on recruiting and retaining talented employees. Great technical talent alone, however, isn’t enough. Our top employees not only understand the technologies that are necessary to deliver an excellent network, but they also value and understand that we’re not only here for the technology; we’re here for our clients. Our clients want their technology to work well, but they also want to know that they are working with people who understand their business and care not only about the end result, but about how we get there as a team.
Employee-Owned and Proud
Our service culture is one reason that becoming an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) has worked so well for SE. While many firms encourage their staff to “think like an owner,” we live that advice every day. Every member of our team is either a current owner, or on a path toward ownership in the immediate future. This drives a level of accountability that’s difficult to reproduce. We’re accountable to one another, as fellow owners, to deliver an exceptional customer experience with every transaction.
At the conclusion of 2016, it was an honor to be one of three Maine companies to receive the Governor's Award of Business Excellence. The award recognizes Maine businesses that demonstrate commitment to employees, community, customer satisfaction, and overall business excellence.
A lot has changed, both in technology and at SE, since I joined 19 years ago. The technology is more complex, yet more reliable than ever. Our geographic coverage has expanded beyond downtown Portland to include most of New England. But the one thing that hasn’t changed is our commitment to our clients.
Technologies will continue to evolve, and our staff will continue to learn and grow – but we remain appreciative that our clients entrust their technology, security, and productivity with us. We look forward to providing excellent engineering and superior customer service for a long time to come.
