Microsoft Retiring Stream (Classic): Here's what to do.

Announcements, IT Solutions & Support

Microsoft is officially retiring Stream (Classic) in April 2024 and replacing it with Stream (on SharePoint). Companies should begin migrating important content out of Stream (Classic) now, as Microsoft warns any content remaining in Stream (Classic) after its retirement date will be deleted.

Originally launched as a "single video portal," Stream (Classic) operated independently from the collaborative capabilities of Microsoft 365. Video files were stored on the retiring microsoftstream.com service and only connected to Microsoft 365 through embed codes and links. To enhance the user experience and create a more seamless platform, Microsoft introduced Stream (on SharePoint), an advanced enterprise video solution fully integrated within the Microsoft 365 ecosystem.

m365-logos-color-circleBy seamlessly integrating Stream into SharePoint, Microsoft 365 users will now have a more cohesive collaboration experience across multiple M365 apps without the need to switch platforms. This integration of Stream brings the benefit of applying your organization's governance and compliance policies from Microsoft 365 to videos within Stream (on SharePoint).

Organizations currently using the classic version of Stream are strongly encouraged to migrate existing videos to Microsoft's SharePoint-based Stream. Microsoft will not automatically migrate your content from Stream (Classic) to Stream (on SharePoint). Videos that have not been migrated will be deleted when Stream (Classic) officially retires. Here is the retirement timeline: (*GCC timeline)
